According to the World Health Organization, suicide rates have increased by 60% worldwide in the last 45 years; an estimated one million people die from suicide every year and more than 20 times that number attempt. Rates among young people have increased to such an extent that they are now the group at highest risk in a third of all countries, while rates of non-fatal suicidal behaviour tend to be two to three times higher in women than in men.
