Zarico is the distinct folk music of the Black francophone Créole culture of southwestern Louisiana. In retracing the footsteps of the Créole population--who came from Africa, the Caribbean and Acadia--the various musical influences and development of the style are shown. Through the movement of the population during the Depression and World War II, the rhythms and melodies of Zarico in turn influenced jazz, the blues, and even rock.
Today, some of the cultural depictions and language in the film are considered outdated and offensive.
