Between the West Coast and the rest of Canada, three ranges of mountains form a great natural barrier, so formidable that not until it was pierced by a railway, did British Columbia become part of Canada. The mountains, however, are a prolific source of minerals; the valleys between the ranges provide fertile soil for farmers; and, most important of all, in the mild, wet climate, trees grow to a great size, vast forests covering the mountainsides. The lumbering industry of British Columbia is shown, with details of the life of the West Coast lumberjack, and the methods which he uses to sell his timber and transport it to its markets.
