This revealing documentary uncovers an invisible labour force of women who work in the isolation of their homes. Known as 'piece workers,' they are estimated to number 100 000 in Québec. Ignored by the law, unprotected by unions, they toil long, lonely hours at monotonous, sometimes risky jobs, often for less than the minimum wage. However, one group of women overcame the system: by forming a cooperative-style workshop, they were able to improve their working conditions. They are now paid by the hour and not by the piece, they receive benefits, and can tailor their work schedules around family responsibilities.
