At 11:00 PM on May 15, 1956, a CF-100 fighter jet fell from 33 000 feet and crashed into the Villa St. Louis, a convent run by the Grey Nuns in the village of Hiawatha Park near Orleans, Ontario. By a cruel stroke of fate the plane hit the only sizeable building in the area, which was surrounded by acres of open field. Witnesses watched as the convent went up in flames. The official death toll came to 15, including 11 nuns, a priest, a cook and the two-man crew of the CF100 plane.
