In 1576, Martin Frobisher set out to find a northern sea route to the Orient. He landed on Baffin Island, encountered the Canadian Inuit, and collected what he thought was gold ore. The following two summers, he led expeditions which mined over 1200 tonnes of worthless rock, and attempted, without success, to establish the first English settlement in North America.
