North of The Pas, in Manitoba, commercial fishing is practised on a big scale. Fishermen chop holes in the ice and, at forty-below, haul in a catch that is part of a five million dollar harvest. Near Norway House, Manitoba, a doctor of the Indian Health Service struggles against ice and muskeg, malnutrition and disease to build a better future for Canada's first citizens. In Banff, a winter carnival attracts crowds that watch ski experts and the crowning of the carnival queen. This issue ends with a colour sequence of Barbara Ann Scott, an Olympic skating champion, in action.
