Filmed on location in Toronto, West Berlin, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the documentary provides an intimate biography of Canadian realist painter Alex Colville. With archival footage, the film traces Colville's career which began as a war artist in 1944. One of the first to be sent to the liberated Belsen concentration camp, Colville recorded what he saw: a profound experience that deeply influenced his later work. Interviews with the artist today and with several of his contemporaries are interwoven with scenes of Colville at work in his studio and in the countryside around Wolfville, N.S. where he lives. Over fifty works were photographed and carefully integrated into the film in order to illustrate the concerns his art addresses, namely the experiences that are paramount to our lives - birth, love, work and death.
